Founding of Kuwait Town

The settlement of Kuwait was established by the Utub tribe, a branch of the Anizah confederation, upon their migration to the region. This founding marked the transformation of a small fishing village into a strategic trading outpost.

Establishment of the Al-Sabah Dynasty

Sabah I bin Jaber was chosen by the local population to serve as the first ruler of Kuwait, initiating the Al-Sabah ruling dynasty. This agreement solidified a system of governance based on consensus and tribal consultation.

1899

Anglo-Kuwaiti Agreement

Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah signed a treaty with the British Empire to ensure protection against Ottoman expansionism. This agreement granted the United Kingdom control over Kuwait's foreign policy in exchange for security guarantees.

1938

Discovery of Oil in Burgan Field

Exploratory drilling led to the discovery of massive oil reserves in the Burgan field, the second-largest sandstone oil field in the world. This event fundamentally altered the national economy and catalyzed rapid modernization.

1961

Independence from the United Kingdom

Kuwait officially ended its protectorate status and gained full independence on June 19, 1961. Shortly thereafter, the country joined the Arab League and the United Nations.

1962

Adoption of the Constitution

Kuwait promulgated its modern constitution, establishing the country as a democratic state with a focus on civil liberties and parliamentary processes. It remains one of the oldest functioning constitutions in the Gulf region.

1990

Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait

Iraqi forces invaded and occupied Kuwait in August 1990, triggering an international crisis. The occupation lasted seven months and caused significant damage to the country's infrastructure and environment.

1991

Liberation by International Coalition

A U.S.-led international coalition launched Operation Desert Storm to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwaiti territory. The country was officially liberated in February 1991, followed by a massive reconstruction effort.

Granting of Women's Suffrage

Accession of Emir Mishal Al-Ahmad

Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah ascended to the throne in December 2023 following the passing of Emir Nawaf. His leadership has emphasized domestic reform and a commitment to national development goals.
