Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics

Los Angeles · July 14-30, 2028

The Games will return to the United States for the first time since 1996, featuring a focus on existing infrastructure and sustainability.

How it's played

The Olympics are a festival of sports rather than a single game: athletes from nearly every nation qualify in their discipline and battle for gold, silver and bronze. Track, pool, court and field events follow a packed schedule, and every medal counts toward the medal table.

A brief history of the Olympic Games

776 BC – 393 ADThe ancient Games

For over a millennium, Greek athletes gather at Olympia every four years to compete in running, wrestling and chariot events until the Roman emperor bans the pagan festival in 393 AD.

1896The modern revival

French educator Pierre de Coubertin founds the International Olympic Committee, and Athens hosts the first modern Games: 241 athletes from 14 nations.

1916, 1940 & 1944War cancels three Games

Both world wars wipe out three editions of the Summer Games — the only times the modern Olympics have been cancelled outright.

1924Winter and the flame

Chamonix stages the first Winter Games, and Paris 1924 introduces the Olympic motto 'Citius, Altius, Fortius'. The Olympic flame debuts at Amsterdam in 1928.

1960The Paralympics begin

Rome hosts the first Paralympic Games, growing from the Stoke Mandeville wheelchair games for war veterans into a parallel global movement.

1980sBoycotts and breakthroughs

Cold War boycotts mar Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984, but the 1984 Games also open the door to professional athletes and commercial sponsorship that bankrolls the movement.

1994 – todayThe alternating calendar

The Winter Games shift to the even years between Summer Games, giving the movement a global event every two years with more than 200 nations and 10,000+ athletes competing.
