Australian Open 2027

Melbourne Park · Melbourne · January 17–31, 2027

The Australian Open will serve as the opening Grand Slam tournament of the 2027 season.

How it's played

Players (or doubles pairs) hit the ball over the net, with each game running 15, 30, 40 then game — you must win by two clear points. Six games with a two-game margin takes a set, and the match goes to whoever wins more sets, best of three (five for the men's majors).

A brief history of tennis

1877Wimbledon begins

The All England Club hosts the first lawn tennis championship in London — the world's oldest tennis tournament, won by Spencer Gore before a few hundred spectators.

1881–1905The other majors arrive

The U.S. Championships begin in 1881, the French in 1891 and the Australasian (later Australian) in 1905, forming the four tournaments that became the Grand Slams.

1900Davis Cup and the international game

Dwight Davis donates the cup that becomes men's tennis's premier team competition, spreading the sport across Europe, Australasia and the Americas.

1968The Open Era

Professionals are finally admitted to the Grand Slams, ending the decades-long split between amateur and pro circuits. Rod Laver completes the calendar Grand Slam in the first Open season, repeating his 1962 amateur feat.

1972–1973The tours form

The ATP is founded by players in 1972, and Billie Jean King founds the WTA in 1973 — the same year the U.S. Open becomes the first major to pay men and women equal prize money.

1970s–1990sSuperstar television age

The Borg–McEnroe rivalry, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf's dominance, and Pete Sampras' 14 majors carry tennis into a global television era.

2003 – todayThe Big Three

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic win a combined 60+ Grand Slam singles titles and lift every major record, while the sport expands into Asia and the Middle East.
